Nothing looks like a traditional chair or table- or even room, for that matter. In other words, your brain is failing to find past references to make sense of this reality. In this moment, System 2 would kick in. Your concentration would become more intentional about your surroundings, and you would feel as if it took more effort to figure out what to do in this new, seemingly bizarre space. The latter example (System 2) describes how you may feel while navigating through a career obstacle. After all, more often than not, challenging career goals lead you to new, awkward, uncomfortable places. The good berichterstattung is When you find yourself in uncharted territory, y ou have the opportunity to grow. The bad news is that it doesnt necessarily mean that you know how to embrace- or even recognize- the growth while its happening.Often the discomfort can feel overwhelming. In these instances, the stress signals in your brain will fire, causing your brain to go running for the hills in search of System 1. Your brain operates on a path of least resistance and will always try to find the easiest way to do something. When faced with adversity, it will try to use System 1 to find an answer. Ive had managers who were self-serving, abrupt, sexist, patronising, shirking suck-ups. (His name was Scott. If youre reading this, Scott, take this as your feedback.) And I was too inexperienced back then to know how to give him feedback that might have not only eased our sticky relationship, but made him a much nicer manager in the future. Thats just it, though Giving feedback to a higher-up is tough. But, whether your anfhrer is acting inappropriately in meetings, has made a total blunder, or is just doing something that makes your working life totally miserable, giving feedback thats courteous, respectful, and direct can go a long way in making your relationship better. When youve got a tough conversation to have with your boss, you might find it easier to have a format to hang it on. Otherwise theres the possibility of your feedback turning into a sweaty, rambling rant, ending only in tears and you being escorted from the building. Nope, if youre going to man up enough to do this, youre going to do it right. And heres how.Step 1 ContextLaunching into a personal attack is rarely effective when youre talking to anyone- let alone your boss- so you need to set the scene. At this point, your boss might have no clue that he has done anything wrong (or he could be the type who does know but doesnt care, in which case you need a stronger intervention than this). Start by giving him time to warm up to the idea that an unpleasant conversation is about to drop right into his lap. Scott yes, hes our fall guy, since last weeks event, something you did/said/didnt do has been playing on my mind. And rather than keep worrying about it, I thought it better to get it out in the open. I dont like confrontation, so this might be tough for me, but if were going to move forward Id rather tackle it now.Step 2 The Emotional BitYes, its what were taught in all of those I Love Him, Why Cant He Love My Brand of Crazy? relationship books. Basically, youve got to take the heat out of the moment. Once youve dropped the fact that you have a problem in your managers lap, he might feel defensive or under pressure, but you can move the conversation forward by shifting the focus from to you. Think When you did X, it made me feel Y. Or Scott, at last week s event, when you shouted at me in front of my colleagues and our customers, it made me feel embarrassed/belittled/humiliated/like kicking you in the shins.The good bit? Nobody can dispute how you felt. They might differ on how events unfolded, but they cant argue with how it made you feel. Winner. Step 3 Focus on the FutureSo, now youve explained the way in which your boss acted like a total doofus, and youve calmly discussed exactly how that made you feel. (All of which was horrible and tense and made your legs go shaky like the time you called your teacher Mom in class.) So, now what? Now its time to show your boss that youre excited to move past this incident and to find practical steps you can take to improve the climate of your relationship- or at least downgrade it from a hurricane to just a bit gusty. Focus your language here less on The Incident and more on how you can both do things differently in the future. Scott, I realize that I made a mistake, but I would have respond ed better to private feedback rather than being confronted in the meeting. How can we approach this situation differently in the future? Would it be helpful to touch base before meetings to make sure were on the same page, for me to send you reports before presenting to the team, or to have a weekly one-on-one?By having your boss work with you to improve how you work together, youre suddenly a team, working together on a project thats of real importance. The added bonus is that youre not left struggling with this issue alone. A problem shared is a problem halved, even if it is with a complete asshole with unfortunate people skills. Youre not left wrestling with how to solve it- youve made it as much your boss problem as it is yours. I wont say that giving feedback is easy, especially when youre wrestling with your own pompous, unbearable version of Scott. But in many cases, those few moments of awkwardness can lead to years of a better working relationship. And if not? Well, then do what I did all those years ago. 5 Signs Your Résumé Is Holding You Back 5 Signs Your Résumé Is Holding You Back When you’re searching for a job, nothing is more frustrating than sending out scores of résumés for positions you know you’re qualified for and not getting any interviews. If that’s happening to you, your résumé may be holding you back in some way. Of course, in a tight job market like this one, it can be hard to know if the issue is simply the market and the amount of competition out there or if your résumé itself is putting you at a disadvantage. Here are five of the biggest indicators  that it's your résumé that's probably the problem: 1. You’re applying for plenty of jobs for which you match the listed qualifications, but you aren’t getting interviews. Most people, even the exceptionally well-qualified, don’t get interviews for every job they apply for. But if you’re applying for dozens of jobs per month â€" jobs for which you truly do meet the qualifications â€" and never hearing anything back, chances are good that your application materials are responsible.  Your résumé probably isn’t going to get you interviews at even half the jobs you apply to. But if it’s not even scoring you a success rate of one in 10, that tells you that you need to revisit what you’re sending out. 2. You feel like you’re a much more valuable worker than your résumé shows. A lot of people think to themselves, “If I could only get an interview, they’d see what a great fit I am.” But if you feel that way, your résumé isn’t doing its job. If you’re a great employee â€" someone with a track record of achieving at a high level in past jobs â€" it’s your résumé’s job to show that. If it’s not, you need to rewrite your résumé until it reflects why an employer should be excited to talk to you. A common response to this is, “But the type of work I do is hard to convey on a résumé.” However, being a valuable employee is about getting results for your employer, and there’s always a way to describe those results on a résumé.  It doesn’t have to be as quantitative as “increased sales by 20 percent” or “promoted twice in two years,” although those are great accomplishments to include if they’re true. Instead, it might be something more like “became the department’s go-to source for quickly and accurately resolving billing discrepancies,” “built a reputation of working successfully with previously unhappy clients” or “resolved an inherited four-month backlog in three weeks.” Whatever it was that made you excellent at your work, that’s what your résumé needs to convey. Otherwise, it won’t open many doors for you. 3. If you imagine the résumé of someone with a similar work history but who has done mediocre work, it doesn’t look much different from your own. Your résumé shouldn’t just list what activities you engaged in at each job. Instead, it should convey how well you did them. Hiring managers probably won't be especially impressed by your job descriptions. What they care about is whether you excelled in the role. If your résumé doesn’t convey that you were better than that other guy who had a similar job, there’s nothing to make an employer think you’re the one worth interviewing. The way you address this is by focusing your résumé on what you achieved in each role and how you excelled, not just a list of duties. 4. It’s three or more pages. Job seekers with long résumés regularly protest that they can’t possibly fit their full job history on two pages. But many highly qualified, senior-level  candidates regularly manage to stick to two-page (and sometimes one-page) résumés. So if you exceed two pages, most hiring managers will see you as someone who can’t edit, doesn’t understand what information is most important and doesn't respect their time. Are you really willing to accept that outcome just so you don’t have to trim down your text? 5. When you do get interviews, interviewers seem surprised by some of the information you give them.  If your interviewer seems pleasantly surprised by a work achievement or other qualification that comes up in the interview, it might be something that should have been on your résumé in the first place. Similarly, if your interviewer seems disappointed to learn that, say, your last job was only a few hours a week or lasted only a few months, that’s a flag that your résumé might need to be clearer. 6 unusual habits of the world's most creative people 6 unusual habits of the world's most creative people I expend a huge amount of my time and energy writing books and articles and working to keep my company innovative. I’ve developed an obsession with some of history’s most creative minds in the hope that I might learn some tricks to expand my own creative productivity.Some of the things I’ve learned are more useful than others, and some are simply too weird to try.Steve Jobs, for example, routinely sat on toilets, dangling his bare feet in the water while he came up with new ideas, and Yoshiro Nakamatsu (inventor of the floppy disc) would dive deep under water until his brain was deprived of oxygen, then write his ideas on an underwater sticky pad.Weird ideas aside, I’ve developed a pretty good understanding of the habits of some of history’s most creative minds. There’s enough commonality between different people that I’ve distilled their habits into strategies that anyone can follow.Six of these strategies stand out because they have the power to change the way you thi nk about creativity. Give them a try, and you’ll reach new levels of creative productivity.1. Wake up earlyNot all creative minds are morning people. Franz Kafka routinely stayed up all night writing, and William Styron (author of  Sophie’s Choice, among other best sellers) woke up at noon every day and considered his “morning” routine to be staying in bed for another hour to think.However, early risers make up the clear majority of creative thinkers. The list of creative early risers ranges from Benjamin Franklin to Howard Schultz to Ernest Hemmingway, though they didn’t all wake up early for the same reasons. Ben Franklin woke up early to plan out his day, while Schultz uses the time to send motivational emails to his employees.For many creative people, waking up early is a way to avoid distractions. Ernest Hemingway woke up at 5 a.m. every day to begin writing. He said, “There is no one to disturb you and it is cool and cold and you come to your work and warm as you w rite.”The trick to making getting up early stick is to do it every day and avoid naps- no matter how tired you feel. Eventually, you will start going to bed earlier to make up for the lost sleep. This can make for a couple of groggy days at first, but you’ll adjust quickly, and before you know it, you’ll join the ranks of creative early risers.2. Exercise frequentlyThere’s plenty of evidence pointing to the benefits of exercise for creativity. Feeling good physically gets you in the right mood to focus and be productive. Exercise also forces you to have disconnected time (it’s tough to text or email while working out), and this allows you to reflect on whatever it is you’re working on. In a Stanford study, 90% of people were more creative after they exercised.It’s no surprise that so many creative and successful people built exercise into their daily routines. Kurt Vonnegut took walks into the nearby town, swam laps, and did push-ups and sit-ups, Richard Branson runs e very morning, and composers Beethoven and Tchaikovsky both walked daily.3. Stick to a strict scheduleIt’s a common misconception that in order to be creative, one must live life on a whim with no structure and no sense of  need to do anything, but the habits of highly successful and creative people suggest otherwise.In fact, most creative minds schedule their days rigorously. Psychologist William James described the impact of a schedule on creativity, saying that only by having a schedule can we “free our minds to advance to really interesting fields of action.”4. Keep your day jobCreativity flourishes when you’re creating for yourself and no one else. Creativity becomes more difficult when your livelihood depends upon what you create (and you begin to think too much about what your audience will think of your product).Perhaps this is why so many successful and creative people held on to their day jobs. Many of them, like Stephen King, who was a schoolteacher, produced their breakout (and, in King’s case, what many consider his very best) work while they still held a 9 to 5.Day jobs provide more than the much-needed financial security to create freely. They also add structure to your day that can make your creative time a wonderful release. The list of successful, creative minds who kept their day jobs is a long one.Some notable individuals include Jacob Arabo, who started designing his own jewelry while working in a jewelry shop; William Faulkner, who worked in a power plant while writing  As I Lay Dying; and musician Philip Glass, who worked as a plumber.5. Learn to work anywhere, anytimeA lot of people work in only one place, believing it’s practically impossible for them to get anything done anywhere else. Staying in one place is actually a crutch; studies show that changing environments is beneficial to productivity and creativity. E.B. White,E.B. White, author of  Charlotte’s Web, said it well: “A writer who waits for ideal conditions und er which to work will die without putting a word on paper.” The same is true for any type of creative work. If you keep waiting until you are in the perfect place at the ideal time, the time will never come.Steve Jobs started Apple in his mom’s garage, and JK Rowling wrote the first ideas for  Harry Potter  on a napkin on a train. When you have a creative idea, don’t wait- put it into action as soon as you can. Recording that spark of creativity may very well be the foundation of something great.6. Learn that creative blocks are just procrastinationAs long as your heart is still beating, you have the ability to come up with new ideas and execute them. They may not always be great ones, but the greatest enemy of creativity is inactivity.Author Jodi Picoult summarized creative blocks perfectly: “I don’t believe in writer’s block. Think about it- when you were blocked in college and had to write a paper, didn’t it always manage to fix itself the night before the paper was due? Writer’s block is having too much time on your hands. If you have a limited amount of time to write, you just sit down and do it. You might not write well every day, but you can always edit a bad page. You can’t edit a blank page.”“I don’t believe in writer’s block. The idea of getting those who break the law off the streets appeals to you. Maybe you looked into it a little and were immediately overwhelmed by the sheer number of jobs that are available in this field.   Or maybe youve considered furthering your education, going to school to get a degree in some area of law enforcement. Now youre really confused as you realize that there are criminal justice degrees...and criminal justice jobs. And there are criminology degrees and criminology jobs. Whats the difference? Sometimes this question comes from job seekers. Sometimes its from people who are trying to decide on a college major, and sometimes its just from the curious. Whatever the source,  its easy to get confused because the difference is subtle but distinct. So what  is  the difference between criminal justice and criminology? Criminology The key part of the word here is ology, which effectively translates to study of. Criminology is the study of crime, just like psychology is the study of the psyche and sociology is the study of society. Criminology is is a social science and is considered a subset of sociology. Criminologists research, study, analyze, and advise on all aspects of deviant human behavior, from the cause of crimes to their consequences. The study of criminology informs our understanding of how, why, when and where crimes occur and suggests policies and procedures to respond and prevent it. Sub-fields exist under the umbrella of criminology, such as  environmental criminology, which is the study of the relationship between crimes and the environment in which they occur. People tend to act upon and react to societal norms.   Careers in criminology include criminal profiling and forensic psychology. Criminal Justice Criminal justice is essentially the application of criminology. While criminology is the study of crime, criminal justice describes the societal response to crime. The criminal justice system is comprised of multiple components that enforce laws, investigate crimes, try and punish criminals, and rehabilitate those who are convicted. As you can imagine, there are many, many different types of jobs available in this sector, and they overlap with careers in criminology. For example, a forensic psychologist  can be said to work in both criminology and criminal justice because he studies and observes criminal behavior and is often also instrumental in investigating crimes, profiling criminals, and offering insight to trial preparation and jury selection.   Police officers and detectives and investigators are integral components of the criminal justice system. So are corrections officers, wardens, and probation officers. Jobs and careers can range from a police dispatcher in a municipality to a position with the federal government, such as with the FBI.   Which Is Right for You? As you can see, theres pretty much something for everyone so choosing can come down to your interests and talents. And you dont actually have to make a decision between criminal justice and criminology because they cover a great deal of the same ground. The key is to first figure out how youd like to serve your community, then do some research into the education, training, and experience necessary to achieve your goals.

Berman thought he was stuck in non-profit fundraiser jobs, but a new resume proved his sales chops.  It’s not uncommon for job seekers to talk about leaving the business world to work for nonprofits or charities. Jobs like that might pay less, but the trading the for-profit rat race for work that contributes to your karmic bottom line and is (presumably) more stable than the hypercompetitive corporate world, might be worth it.Not always, according to C.J. Berman, who lives in northern New Jersey and has had six jobs in the last 14 years as a fundraiser for nonprofit organizations building research funds for everything from AIDS to skin cancer.Some nonprofit jobs can be long term and stable. Nevertheless, organizations that exist by raising money to give it away â€" and hence are judged by how little they can spend on their own administration and upkeep - aren’t exactly offering tenure.A study released in February by TACS, an organization that supports nonprofits, showed tha t only 30 percent of respondents at nonprofits fear for their jobs this year. Most of those responding were executives and managers, however, not front-line fund raisers â€" a job whose security tends to rely much more on movements in the economy and specific campaigns being run by specific charities, Berman said.It does feel good at the end of a day to know you’ve been working to fund community organizations or healthcare outreach or medical research, said Berman, who got his master’s degree in social work in 1995 and planned to become a therapist before being attracted into the operation of human-services organizations.“I realized I was pretty good at fund raising and organizing events, and enjoyed it. You can really make a difference once you’ve been someplace for a little while,” Berman said.The problem is that opportunities for professional advancement tend to be few, and roles to play are far more limited than at corporations.Berman’s ambition to move beyond fundra ising and into a marketing role â€" he’s finishing up a master’s degree in integrated marketing â€" was frustrated partially by the relative lack of online/real-world marketing activity among the non-profits for which he’s worked.“I want to learn the cutting-edge science in marketing,” he said. “I was looking for ways to apply integrated marketing, particularly in the digital space and figure out how to make sales.”It was frustrated further by the recent decision of his current employer, The American Skin Association, to downsize because of pressures in the economy. He got two months’ notice that his job would be among those cut.Dislodging yourself from your careerNot surprisingly, jobs in fundraising are hard to find in a down economy. It’s even trickier if you’re trying to grow into a more responsible position or make the leap into a corporate job.“I thought I could continue on the nonprofit fundraising track, but I was having trouble finding ways to apply my interest in integrated marketing,” Berman said. “I thought people in corporations wouldn’t take me seriously because I didn’t have marketing experience. The question was ‘how can I explain that I do a lot of marketing even though I don’t work in a marketing department?’“It felt a lot like I was stuck in nonprofits because nothing I had done seemed relevant to someone in a corporation,” he said.Not so, according to Rosemarie Ginsberg, a certified professional resume writer who works with Ladders. Ginsberg said Berman didn’t realize how directly applicable his proven skills are or how to explain them to someone who didn’t live and breathe nonprofit.“What he was doing as a fundraiser was the same thing a salesperson does: building relationships and organizing events and bringing in money,” Ginsberg said. “They had goals to hit and prospects to call and campaigns. It may be indirect selling, but you’re getting money from people in one form or another, and the ability to put those things together is easily transferrable to the for-profit sector.”In many ways, fundraising is harder than sales because what you’re selling completely lacks the hard-ROI data CFOs often demand for any capital expense, Ginsberg said.“There is a benefit you sell,” Berman said. “It’s mostly psychological: ‘Wouldn’t it be great if you could help cure skin cancer?’ ”“If I had my choice, I’d rather go out and sell the widget,” Ginsberg said. “Fundraising is an extremely challenging role. If he can do that successfully for someone in nonprofit, why can’t he do it for a for-profit organization?”Translating a non-profit resume to salesBerman and Ginsberg went over his resume and qualifications both via e-mail and phone, breaking down the responsibilities of each job and each skill set to identify those that would be transferrable to a corporate role and translate them into language easily recognizable and attractive to corporate recru iters or hiring managers.“Anybody can say, ‘I sold more than the three other people in the department,’ but can you quantify it and then tell me how you did that?” Ginsberg asked. “Was it your relationship-building skills? Was it your product knowledge? You have to get clients talking about what they do and what made them better at it than someone else. ”Berman’s previous resume, for example, didn’t use the same kind of language to describe fund raising that a corporation would to describe sales.“We wouldn’t use the word ‘quota,’ but I could say we surpassed our goal by X percent and reached out to this many people, and here’s how we structured our campaign,” Berman said. “I had been trying to give specifics in a way that wouldn’t alienate prospective nonprofits, but it just wasn’t translating.”“Going through the process really boosted my confidence. [Rosemarie] made me think about my experiences in a much broader way,” Berman said. “I’m m ore able to present things I would have thought of in a more narrow way as being more generally applicable. Rosemarie kept telling me, ‘Don’t present yourself just as a nonprofit professional; present yourself as a person with certain transferrable skill sets.'”For example, in addition to cold-calling prospective donors and selling them on the publicity and psychological benefits of making contributions, Berman was the primary or secondary organizer and marketer for fundraising events designed to raise money both from sponsorships sold ahead of time and donations made on site.“[Ginsberg] reminded me that corporations run those sorts of events as well,” Berman said. “They could be trade shows or events for prospective customers â€" either way, if you can run an effective event, you can run it for a different employer.”“People don’t always recognize their own value or the contribution they make to their employers,” Ginsberg said. “They think they know what their skills are but don’t always understand the value of those skills in terms of how they improve the bottom line or the value they bring to the company.”“It wasn’t easy,” Berman said. “She made me work really hard in terms of thinking about what I do and how I had all the tools I would need. I’m applying for both nonprofits and corporate roles, and I may not want to go corporate. I feel like I can if I get the opportunity in that direction.”“He was definitely not one of my easier clients,” Ginsberg said. “Nonprofit is completely different from corporate. He wasn’t your standard software-sales guy; you could almost write that person’s resume without too much input from them, it’s almost that standard. With C.J., it was a lot of pulling out of him things that could be transferrable.”

Feel free to deviate from the standard template that everyone else follows. 6. Promote your expertise Don’t sell yourself short. Be confident and mention any specific experience that will make you an ideal candidate for the position. Start by saying Given my extensive experience as… and make your distinctive skills come into light. 7.  Cut the fluff Avoid using catchphrases like goal-oriented, hard-working  or fast-paced. Let your experience and references speak for you. Employers will be more impressed to hear you talk about your passion for the field and dedication to the people or team with whom you worked. 8. Make your adjectives paint a colorful picture Using  flavorless adjectives such as good or nice will make you sound average. You definitely dont want to sink into mediocrity. Maybe youve tried your best to fit in and even talked to your boss about it, who stepped in but couldnt fix the problem. If this  sounds like your case,  youre working in a toxic environment. Toxic environments dont change without serious interventions from company leadership. Instead of waiting around for that to happen, your best bet is to get out today. A forecast from the Department of Labor shows mechanical engineering employment holding its own through 2024growing a little more than engineering jobs overall and only a bit more slowly than overall job growth in the United States. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that mechanical engineering employment in the U.S. will total 290,000 jobs in 2024. Thats 5.3 percent more than the 277,500 jobs that the agency counted in 2014. That compares with a predicted 7 percent increase in all jobs and a 4 percent increase in all engineering jobs. The most significant growth is predicted in the area of professional, scientific, and technical services as companies continue to contract work. This category of employment had 87,000 jobs in 2014 representing 31.5 percent of the ME profession. The BLS forecasts a 16.8 percent increase to 102,100 jobs in 2024, accounting for 35 percent of jobs. Within that category, jobs identified specifically as mechanical engineering services are expected to grow almost 23 percent to 65,000 in 2024 and to constitute more than 22 percent of total ME employment. The agency also predicts a 13 percent increase to 288,600 jobs in mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction. Mechanical engineering jobs in other fields are also expected to show double-digit increases, although from smaller bases. The BLS predicts employment in construction, for example, will grow almost 14 percent from 3,700 to 4,200 jobs. Manufacturing is still expected to be the leading employer of mechanical engineers in 2024, when it may account for 46.2 percent of the profession, but overall the field is expected to show a small decline. Manufacturing companies employed almost half the MEs working in the U.S. in 2014, some 136,800 people. The BLS expects U.S. manufacturers to employ 134,900 mechanical engineers in 2024, 1.4 percent fewer than in 2014. The median salary for mechanical engineers in 2014 was $83,060, about $5,000 less than the median for all engineers, but more than double the median for all U.S. jobs.
