5 Signs Your Résumé Is Holding You Back 5 Signs Your Résumé Is Holding You Back When youâre searching for a job, nothing is more frustrating than sending out scores of résumés for positions you know youâre qualified for and not getting any interviews. If thatâs happening to you, your résumé may be holding you back in some way. Of course, in a tight job market like this one, it can be hard to know if the issue is simply the market and the amount of competition out there or if your résumé itself is putting you at a disadvantage. Here are five of the biggest indicators that it's your résumé that's probably the problem: 1. Youâre applying for plenty of jobs for which you match the listed qualifications, but you arenât getting interviews. Most people, even the exceptionally well-qualified, donât get interviews for every job they apply for. But if youâre applying for dozens of jobs per month â" jobs for which you truly do meet the qualifications â" and never hearing anything back, chances are good that your application materials are responsible. Your résumé probably isnât going to get you interviews at even half the jobs you apply to. But if itâs not even scoring you a success rate of one in 10, that tells you that you need to revisit what youâre sending out. 2. You feel like youâre a much more valuable worker than your résumé shows. A lot of people think to themselves, âIf I could only get an interview, theyâd see what a great fit I am.â But if you feel that way, your résumé isnât doing its job. If youâre a great employee â" someone with a track record of achieving at a high level in past jobs â" itâs your résuméâs job to show that. If itâs not, you need to rewrite your résumé until it reflects why an employer should be excited to talk to you. A common response to this is, âBut the type of work I do is hard to convey on a résumé.â However, being a valuable employee is about getting results for your employer, and thereâs always a way to describe those results on a résumé. It doesnât have to be as quantitative as âincreased sales by 20 percentâ or âpromoted twice in two years,â although those are great accomplishments to include if theyâre true. Instead, it might be something more like âbecame the departmentâs go-to source for quickly and accurately resolving billing discrepancies,â âbuilt a reputation of working successfully with previously unhappy clientsâ or âresolved an inherited four-month backlog in three weeks.â Whatever it was that made you excellent at your work, thatâs what your résumé needs to convey. Otherwise, it wonât open many doors for you. 3. If you imagine the résumé of someone with a similar work history but who has done mediocre work, it doesnât look much different from your own. Your résumé shouldnât just list what activities you engaged in at each job. Instead, it should convey how well you did them. Hiring managers probably won't be especially impressed by your job descriptions. What they care about is whether you excelled in the role. If your résumé doesnât convey that you were better than that other guy who had a similar job, thereâs nothing to make an employer think youâre the one worth interviewing. The way you address this is by focusing your résumé on what you achieved in each role and how you excelled, not just a list of duties. 4. Itâs three or more pages. Job seekers with long résumés regularly protest that they canât possibly fit their full job history on two pages. But many highly qualified, senior-level candidates regularly manage to stick to two-page (and sometimes one-page) résumés. So if you exceed two pages, most hiring managers will see you as someone who canât edit, doesnât understand what information is most important and doesn't respect their time. Are you really willing to accept that outcome just so you donât have to trim down your text? 5. When you do get interviews, interviewers seem surprised by some of the information you give them. If your interviewer seems pleasantly surprised by a work achievement or other qualification that comes up in the interview, it might be something that should have been on your résumé in the first place. Similarly, if your interviewer seems disappointed to learn that, say, your last job was only a few hours a week or lasted only a few months, thatâs a flag that your résumé might need to be clearer. 6 unusual habits of the world's most creative people 6 unusual habits of the world's most creative people I expend a huge amount of my time and energy writing books and articles and working to keep my company innovative. Iâve developed an obsession with some of historyâs most creative minds in the hope that I might learn some tricks to expand my own creative productivity.Some of the things Iâve learned are more useful than others, and some are simply too weird to try.Steve Jobs, for example, routinely sat on toilets, dangling his bare feet in the water while he came up with new ideas, and Yoshiro Nakamatsu (inventor of the floppy disc) would dive deep under water until his brain was deprived of oxygen, then write his ideas on an underwater sticky pad.Weird ideas aside, Iâve developed a pretty good understanding of the habits of some of historyâs most creative minds. Thereâs enough commonality between different people that Iâve distilled their habits into strategies that anyone can follow.Six of these strategies stand out because they have the power to change the way you thi nk about creativity. Give them a try, and youâll reach new levels of creative productivity.1. Wake up earlyNot all creative minds are morning people. Franz Kafka routinely stayed up all night writing, and William Styron (author of Sophieâs Choice, among other best sellers) woke up at noon every day and considered his âmorningâ routine to be staying in bed for another hour to think.However, early risers make up the clear majority of creative thinkers. The list of creative early risers ranges from Benjamin Franklin to Howard Schultz to Ernest Hemmingway, though they didnât all wake up early for the same reasons. Ben Franklin woke up early to plan out his day, while Schultz uses the time to send motivational emails to his employees.For many creative people, waking up early is a way to avoid distractions. Ernest Hemingway woke up at 5 a.m. every day to begin writing. He said, âThere is no one to disturb you and it is cool and cold and you come to your work and warm as you w rite.âThe trick to making getting up early stick is to do it every day and avoid naps- no matter how tired you feel. Eventually, you will start going to bed earlier to make up for the lost sleep. This can make for a couple of groggy days at first, but youâll adjust quickly, and before you know it, youâll join the ranks of creative early risers.2. Exercise frequentlyThereâs plenty of evidence pointing to the benefits of exercise for creativity. Feeling good physically gets you in the right mood to focus and be productive. Exercise also forces you to have disconnected time (itâs tough to text or email while working out), and this allows you to reflect on whatever it is youâre working on. In a Stanford study, 90% of people were more creative after they exercised.Itâs no surprise that so many creative and successful people built exercise into their daily routines. Kurt Vonnegut took walks into the nearby town, swam laps, and did push-ups and sit-ups, Richard Branson runs e very morning, and composers Beethoven and Tchaikovsky both walked daily.3. Stick to a strict scheduleItâs a common misconception that in order to be creative, one must live life on a whim with no structure and no sense of need to do anything, but the habits of highly successful and creative people suggest otherwise.In fact, most creative minds schedule their days rigorously. Psychologist William James described the impact of a schedule on creativity, saying that only by having a schedule can we âfree our minds to advance to really interesting fields of action.â4. Keep your day jobCreativity flourishes when youâre creating for yourself and no one else. Creativity becomes more difficult when your livelihood depends upon what you create (and you begin to think too much about what your audience will think of your product).Perhaps this is why so many successful and creative people held on to their day jobs. Many of them, like Stephen King, who was a schoolteacher, produced their breakout (and, in Kingâs case, what many consider his very best) work while they still held a 9 to 5.Day jobs provide more than the much-needed financial security to create freely. They also add structure to your day that can make your creative time a wonderful release. The list of successful, creative minds who kept their day jobs is a long one.Some notable individuals include Jacob Arabo, who started designing his own jewelry while working in a jewelry shop; William Faulkner, who worked in a power plant while writing As I Lay Dying; and musician Philip Glass, who worked as a plumber.5. Learn to work anywhere, anytimeA lot of people work in only one place, believing itâs practically impossible for them to get anything done anywhere else. Staying in one place is actually a crutch; studies show that changing environments is beneficial to productivity and creativity. E.B. White,E.B. White, author of Charlotteâs Web, said it well: âA writer who waits for ideal conditions und er which to work will die without putting a word on paper.â The same is true for any type of creative work. If you keep waiting until you are in the perfect place at the ideal time, the time will never come.Steve Jobs started Apple in his momâs garage, and JK Rowling wrote the first ideas for Harry Potter on a napkin on a train. When you have a creative idea, donât wait- put it into action as soon as you can. Recording that spark of creativity may very well be the foundation of something great.6. Learn that creative blocks are just procrastinationAs long as your heart is still beating, you have the ability to come up with new ideas and execute them. They may not always be great ones, but the greatest enemy of creativity is inactivity.Author Jodi Picoult summarized creative blocks perfectly: âI donât believe in writerâs block. Think about it- when you were blocked in college and had to write a paper, didnât it always manage to fix itself the night before the paper was due? Writerâs block is having too much time on your hands. If you have a limited amount of time to write, you just sit down and do it. You might not write well every day, but you can always edit a bad page. You canât edit a blank page.ââI donât believe in writerâs block. The idea of getting those who break the law off the streets appeals to you. Maybe you looked into it a little and were immediately overwhelmed by the sheer number of jobs that are available in this field. Or maybe youve considered furthering your education, going to school to get a degree in some area of law enforcement. Now youre really confused as you realize that there are criminal justice degrees...and criminal justice jobs. And there are criminology degrees and criminology jobs. Whats the difference? Criminologists research, study, analyze, and advise on all aspects of deviant human behavior, from the cause of crimes to their consequences. Sub-fields exist under the umbrella of criminology, such as environmental criminology, which is the study of the relationship between crimes and the environment in which they occur. People tend to act upon and react to societal norms. Careers in criminology include criminal profiling and forensic psychology. Criminal Justice Criminal justice is essentially the application of criminology. While criminology is the study of crime, criminal justice describes the societal response to crime. The criminal justice system is comprised of multiple components that enforce laws, investigate crimes, try and punish criminals, and rehabilitate those who are convicted. As you can imagine, there are many, many different types of jobs available in this sector, and they overlap with careers in criminology. For example, a forensic psychologist can be said to work in both criminology and criminal justice because he studies and observes criminal behavior and is often also instrumental in investigating crimes, profiling criminals, and offering insight to trial preparation and jury selection. Police officers and detectives and investigators are integral components of the criminal justice system. So are corrections officers, wardens, and probation officers. Jobs and careers can range from a police dispatcher in a municipality to a position with the federal government, such as with the FBI. Which Is Right for You? As you can see, theres pretty much something for everyone so choosing can come down to your interests and talents. Itâs not uncommon for job seekers to talk about leaving the business world to work for nonprofits or charities. Jobs like that might pay less, but the trading the for-profit rat race for work that contributes to your karmic bottom line and is (presumably) more stable than the hypercompetitive corporate world, might be worth it.Not always, according to C.J. Itâs even trickier if youâre trying to grow into a more responsible position or make the leap into a corporate job.âI thought I could continue on the nonprofit fundraising track, but I was having trouble finding ways to apply my interest in integrated marketing,â Berman said. âI thought people in corporations wouldnât take me seriously because I didnât have marketing experience. The question was âhow can I explain that I do a lot of marketing even though I donât work in a marketing department?ââIt felt a lot like I was stuck in nonprofits because nothing I had done seemed relevant to someone in a corporation,â he said.Not so, according to Rosemarie Ginsberg, a certified professional resume writer who works with Ladders. If he can do that successfully for someone in nonprofit, why canât he do it for a for-profit organization?âTranslating a non-profit resume to salesBerman and Ginsberg went over his resume and qualifications both via e-mail and phone, breaking down the responsibilities of each job and each skill set to identify those that would be transferrable to a corporate role and translate them into language easily recognizable and attractive to corporate recru iters or hiring managers.âAnybody can say, âI sold more than the three other people in the department,â but can you quantify it and then tell me how you did that?â Ginsberg asked. âWas it your relationship-building skills? Was it your product knowledge? You have to get clients talking about what they do and what made them better at it than someone else. âBermanâs previous resume, for example, didnât use the same kind of language to describe fund raising that a corporation would to describe sales.âWe wouldnât use the word âquota,â but I could say we surpassed our goal by X percent and reached out to this many people, and hereâs how we structured our campaign,â Berman said. âI had been trying to give specifics in a way that wouldnât alienate prospective nonprofits, but it just wasnât translating.ââGoing through the process really boosted my confidence. [Rosemarie] made me think about my experiences in a much broader way,â Berman said. âIâm m ore able to present things I would have thought of in a more narrow way as being more generally applicable. Rosemarie kept telling me, âDonât present yourself just as a nonprofit professional; present yourself as a person with certain transferrable skill sets.'âFor example, in addition to cold-calling prospective donors and selling them on the publicity and psychological benefits of making contributions, Berman was the primary or secondary organizer and marketer for fundraising events designed to raise money both from sponsorships sold ahead of time and donations made on site.â[Ginsberg] reminded me that corporations run those sorts of events as well,â Berman said. âThey could be trade shows or events for prospective customers â" either way, if you can run an effective event, you can run it for a different employer.ââPeople donât always recognize their own value or the contribution they make to their employers,â Ginsberg said. âThey think they know what their skills are but donât always understand the value of those skills in terms of how they improve the bottom line or the value they bring to the company.ââIt wasnât easy,â Berman said. âShe made me work really hard in terms of thinking about what I do and how I had all the tools I would need. Iâm applying for both nonprofits and corporate roles, and I may not want to go corporate. I feel like I can if I get the opportunity in that direction.ââHe was definitely not one of my easier clients,â Ginsberg said. âNonprofit is completely different from corporate. He wasnât your standard software-sales guy; you could almost write that personâs resume without too much input from them, itâs almost that standard. Within that category, jobs identified specifically as mechanical engineering services are expected to grow almost 23 percent to 65,000 in 2024 and to constitute more than 22 percent of total ME employment. The agency also predicts a 13 percent increase to 288,600 jobs in mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction. Mechanical engineering jobs in other fields are also expected to show double-digit increases, although from smaller bases. The BLS predicts employment in construction, for example, will grow almost 14 percent from 3,700 to 4,200 jobs. Manufacturing is still expected to be the leading employer of mechanical engineers in 2024, when it may account for 46.2 percent of the profession, but overall the field is expected to show a small decline. Manufacturing companies employed almost half the MEs working in the U.S. in 2014, some 136,800 people. The BLS expects U.S. manufacturers to employ 134,900 mechanical engineers in 2024, 1.4 percent fewer than in 2014. The median salary for mechanical engineers in 2014 was $83,060, about $5,000 less than the median for all engineers, but more than double the median for all U.S. jobs.
